I was wondering which port is used when you ping another computer. Thanks.

When you ping another computer the ICMP protocol is used, no actual ports are used.

a ping request sends out a type 8 icmp message.

on a successful ping the ping originator receives a type 0 icmp message.

You can find out a lot about what's going on between two machines by running a packet sniffer, ethereal from www.ethereal.com is a very good freeware package.

Hi, I'm having some trouble here, Im running a win 98 Machine, with a cable modem connection , in the past 3-4 days I've been having some DDos attacks, i used Conceal Pc firewall it stopped the ICMP/UDP packets coming in, but as the result my comp can't access the internet, and I wanted to close the Icmp/UDP port altogether, so my computer would not be able to get pingend from outside just like the feature in lunux, can some one help me please, and please send me email regarding this please, thank you...

Maybe you should try Zone Alarm, I feel it is a much better firewall and it will let you decide what to let in and out.
