Ping General Failure and high ping times

October 22, 2009 at 18:19:51
Specs: Windows 7

For some reason today, my internet has been
playing up; I have not installed anything in a
few days and windows update hasn't
downloaded anything for a few days either.

The problem I am having is this. for some
reason, pinging my router ( is
giving some odd results that I have never seen
before, I have been getting pings up to 2711ms
and also have been getting some " General
Failure" messages too.

I use Utorrent and when it is active (and this
has only started tonight) it wont exceed
0.5kb/s yet the ping to my router hits the
thousands/high hundreds.

This is my read out both using Utorrent and
when its off. I started the ping while it was on
and i'l mark where I turned it off.

I have also tried pinging the router from another
machine on the network where the results
were 1ms around the board.

This is a tracert to with
Utorrent off:

Trace complete.

And this is with it on:

Tracing route to
over a maximum of 30 hops:

1 1169 ms 1316 ms 1621 ms
voyager.home []
2 General failure.

Trace complete.

I have turned off windows firewall, tried a
system restore to 11 days ago (when it was
working fine); I have also tried to boot in safe
mode with networking and ran the ping /
tracert with the same results.

The other computer on the network works fine
while my Utorrent is on, how ever my browser
crawls to try and make a connection.

Any help would be appreciated

appears your issue is between your router and you.

does the other computer have the same results?

no, the other computer on the network displays normal results,
i.e. ping time does not exceed 1ms to the router.

someone on the Star Trek Online forums has suggested it could
be a problem with windows zero config, but is unsure how to fix it
on windows 7

"windows zero config" refers to the Windows built in Wireless. If this is a wireless connection then try hooking direct to your router with an Ethernet cable and do the same test to rule out WiFi Interference.

all the signs of a malware/virus/you be hacked
Not unusual for torrents of any flavor

run your antivirus antispyware software if you can update it.
look for keyboard loggers and root kits

Something on that machine is consuming its bandwidth.

Only other idea is that you are wired [not wireless] and your nic is not doing a good job with autonegociate. Set the nic to 100mb full duplex instead.
