I setup a small linux server to access the Internet via isdn from all my machines. the dns works good and the http-proxy as well. but when i want to test my connection to a server on the internet using ping on my w98 clients, i get the name correctly translated into an ip address, but the host is unreachable. From the linux server it works. ping to my local mchines works, ping from my server to machines on the internet works, ping from w98 clients over my linux server does not work.

Are you using a proxy program?
Try IP masqurading, it's good too allow most internet applications to run.

ip-masq will pass your ip traf, sure, and it will pass your icmp traf as well through ip-chains, but you need to configure it. You are masquerading tcp port 80 via squid, or some third party linux proxy solution, right? You need to do as peer says and masq you ip traf and icmp traf. You may need to recompile your kernel.
