I was making some changes to the network, changed the vlans a bit. after changing the vlans on the switches I was able to connect to the servers no problem from those connected to the 2950 which also has the servers connected to as well. the other computers in the IDFs can ping the world, but cannot authenticate, join domain (that says the specified network name is no longer available)access mapped drives, etc. But I am able to access the server using Run and the unc. Everything was working prior to the vlan changes, and the computers connected to the same switch the servers are on, are able to do everything they were before. router is connected to the 2950, 2950 to 3508 fiber switch, 3508 to IDFs
If you're able to ping all machines and access them through 'run', then I'd guess this is a Windows networking problem as opposed to a VLAN-related or routing-related problem.
There is only ONE conclusion here: you misconfigured the vlans. Hey it happens.
Did you backup the switch configs before you did your config? If so restore them.
If not did you document them before the change? If not you just learned two VERY valuable lessons: backup and document.
When you altered the vlans did you also update the trunk link vlans between the switches? This is where I suspect your error is of those pcs on the 2950 can talk to the servers but those on the other switches can't. Trunk ports should contain ALL vlans in the switch.
Imagine the power if you knew how to internet search
