I'm sorry I know this probably sounds like a stupid question, but I'm new to this what is pinging and how do you do it?

To ping is to send a packet to an IP address to verify a network connection to another end point on the network. Kinda like a sonar on a ship sends out a wound wave, the echo is a confirmation that something else is out there. Hope that helps.

No man, it doesn't sound stupid if you just don't know what's pinging.
When you "ping" a computer, your computer sends to the target a 32bits message and the target answers as fast as it can [it replyes].
To do this, just open the ms-dos command prompt and write "ping ???.???.???.???". the "????..." stuff complete it with the target's ip. If you don't know what is an ip, then I must tell you that an ip is some sort of ID of a certain computer inside a network. An ip must have any computer that uses the internet. but instead of an ip, you can write a hostname. For example, you want to ping the hotmail server then write "ping hotmail.com" and the hotmail server will pe pinged 4 times. If you want to do this forever, then use the "-t" parameter before the hostname or ip [ex: "ping -t hotmail.com"]
I hope you understood. Enjoy pinging!
