Hi, i am fairly new to networking and I am trying to setup a small peer-to-peer network between my new and old computer. The new system has windows xp home and the old has windows 98. I have an ethernet card in each that are both working correctly and a 10m CAT5 crossed cable. I have linked the 2 computers and am not really sure how to configure the windows 98 system. I want to be able to swap files across the network and share the internet access that the windows xp system has installed.
Can someone help.....maybe a step by step instruction....Would be very grateful for any advice....

Thanks

PunK

Hi PunK,

Bob Cerelli's website has some good tutorials on setting up Peer-to-Peer Network for 98 and XP. Won't hurt if you take a look at the following two links:

WindowsXP Peer-to-Peer Networking
http://www.onecomputerguy.com/networking/xp_network.htm

Setting up a Win9x Peer to Peer Network

Hope this helps

Ok. Where to start........

Do both the XP and Win98 machines have IP addresses and appropraite netmasks? (eg 192.168.0.1 255.255.255.0 for one machine and 192.168.0.2 255.255.255.0 for the other.)

If you have a firewall running either disable it or set it to allow traffic between your 2 IP addresses.

Can you ping from one machine to the other?
(ie from 192.168.0.1, can you ping 192.168.0.2 and get a reply.)

These are a few basic bits to look at. Once you get a reply to the ping, you should be able to setup file and print sharing between the 2 machines. Just remember to turn the sharing off befoe connecting to the internet. I'm sure you would not like to share your files with the world.

Hope this helps.

Hello guys...thanks for your responses!! I took a look at the website that you recommened XPUser and managed to get a link between the 2 computers. I set the I.P etc for both machines to auto...with TCP/IP protocols. I have also setup up a shortcut to the 98 hard drive and files on the XP desktop, which works perfectly. Only problem I have now is that when i try to access the XP machine from the 98, i get an error saying "//MAIN is unaccessable....you do not have full access resources" (MAIN is the name i have gvien to the XP machine).
I have setup the XP system to allow file sharing...but still I cannot get anything from XP on the 98 system. Its not the end of the world but I would be interested to know what the problem is if you or anyone else could shed light on this....

Thankyou both again....you do not realise how helpful this forum is and you both have done an excellent job keeping it that way!!!

Thanks

PunK
