Win3.x is not a plug and pray OS, upgrade to at least win95, or try to find win3.x drivers for the card, (good luck on that). Also you will need to load dos network drivers for the win3.x box and put them in the autoexec.bat and config.sys files so they will load on boot.

Does upgrading to win9.x start to look better now.

What laptop model is it?

I had success setting up an old IBM 75 MHz laptop with Win3.11 on floppies and then loading the drivers from the website for the PCMCIA card, then setting up the network, joining my workgroup and copying the files for Win95 onto the hard drive. I did not have a CDROM for the laptop.

I tried a Belkin F5D5020 NIC on my IBM Thinkpad I-Series 1500 with Win98, and had the exact same problem you described. I tried the exact same card in an older Dell (also with Windows 98) and had no problems. I downloaded the latest PCMCIA slot drivers, but to no avail. Belkin basically said "tough luck", and I decided to give up on that card and try another manufacturer. I now have a Linksys card which is recognized (yay!) but of course I still don't have the network up and running. Other problems...

So, if you have a Belkin F5D5020 and an IBM Thinkpad with Win98, you might want to try another NIC manufacturer.
