pci wifi card install with wrong directions

November 27, 2012 at 06:22:30
Specs: Windows 7, p4 / 512MB
i just purchased and acquired a new pci wireless adapter card
300MB b/g/n 802.11 (brand and model unknown

the directions that were included were for a USB wireless adapter so I am installing without directions

It is being installed on a Dell Dimension 8200 40GB HDD, 512 MB RAM, p4 with WINDOWS XP HOME

i am getting a network cable disconnected error message on the installed task bar icon and in the control panel

i installed the card then the software with no luck so i removed the card then installed the software (driver CD) and got further along in the installation process

i loaded Linux Mint 11 on the computer in an attempt to load the driver software from that
no luck so far so i will have to remove the PCI wireless adapter card, install the driver software from CD then reinstall the card and try installing the software on the Linux side after the card has been removed and installed

there are no connectors for any type of cable to connect to the card or ports on the card
just two antenna ports (which had antennas connected to them after i installed the card)

i am clueless about the network cable disconnected message at this point

How did you buy a NEW PCI card & you don't know what brand it is? Did you buy it freom Ebay?

The unplugged network cable message might have come from the already installed ethernet card. Installing the driver in Linux won't help Windows, in a dual boot scenario. If you still have Windows, check the device manager & in Linux run ifconfig -a
There should be a card marked wlan0

Not a single mention of a wireless router. You have to have a wifi router to use a wifi card.

Ralink RT2860 Wireless LAN; a/b/g/n WLAN card on a Windows XP Home machine

I read somewhere that the included driver software won't work so I have to use some part of WINDOWS to set up this card

I am using an AT&T DSL line; wifi is 54MB; connection speed is????
not relevant

the problem is the pci card (software/driver) being incompatible with XP

no luck connecting on MINT 11 yet (linux)
