PCI card- Improvised antenna?

I have a linksys wireless modem router and PCI card for my desktop. The signal is good at times and low sometimes. Occasionally it breaks off. I wonder if someone has fashioned and used an improvised extendable antenna (for the card) to achieve better signal? Is this possible?
