I do Computer repairs and wanted to use PCAnywhere to be able to Access computers under contract for repairs. I am using the latest version of PCAnywhere (11.5) with all the updates.
When I run the HOST software on the PC's I want to connect to I cannot see them from MY PC. Most of these PC'a are on Verizon DSL Networks.
If I go to those PC's and Access MY computer I can see my PC and control it. I am on a "Road Runner" Cable connection.
My inquires to Symantec keep telling me that I have to set certain functions in the ROUTER at the HOST site to pass the information to a particular PC. I have done this on MY Site but the router is in my Computer room and I can control it. Those PC's on the Verizon connections have no "in-house" network. They are single PC's and have NO ROUTERS.
Can anyone tell me if Verizon in it's scheme of things uses routers on it's network that I do not see and therefor cannot setup options for.?
These PC's are using Windows Firewall and I have made the modifications there to enable pcAnywhere to pass data on the prescribed 1531 and 1532 Ports. But even if I temporarly turn off the wirewall I am unable to connect.

Sorry, I don't have an answer to your question. But, if the computers are running XP you could use the Remote Assitance option which gives you much the same functionality that PCAnywhere gives you. In fact you should be able to set up a Remote Assitance link on their computer to automatically send a request to you.
And if you are not paying for a PCAnywhere license for each computer you are installing the host software on, you are violating the licensing for that product. Remote Assistance is free.

OK, I'll ask.
Where exactly do you think the computers connect to with the verizon dsl????
One good part of this is you can use their computer to connect to yours. While that doesn't prove connection fully it helps a lot. It doesn't prove that inbound ports and outbound ports are the same nor does it prove anything with firewalls or modems.Be sure you know all ports on both sides.

You might want to check out logmein. My son and I both use it to work on PC's. It works great. John

THANKS for the replies...!
I am under the impression that PC Anywhere will only allow control of PC's running XP PRO. Both of the PC's I am currenmtly trying to remotely control are running XP Media Edition.... I have all three here at my worksite... PLUS a win 98 SE Machine. So my side would not be a problem.
As for other remote Access products I am unfamiliar with them as I have owned and used pcAnywhere since the "Dawn of Time" so to speak.
I am still researching but I think the Westell "DSL Modem" that Verizon DSL uses on their network is actually a "router"... and the two ports I need to direct are configurable. I am looking for that in setup information.
I WILL check out other products if this latest venture doesn't pan out. Thanks for the Link to the other prodyucts.

"I am under the impression that PC Anywhere will only allow control of PC's running XP PRO"
No, it is Remote Desktop (which comes with XP Pro) that will only work with an XP Pro machine as the host. PC Anywhere should work with most Windows OSes. Check the documentation. Remote Assistance is available on Pro or Home (and possibly Media Center).

Whoops.! That is ALMOST what I meant to say... Remote Assistance only works with PRO. I'll have to check out the other versions but I thought I read somewhere where PRO had to be on the HOST PC. More Reading.... :-(

Did I not make myself clear? Remote DESKTOP can only be run with XP Pro as the host. Remote ASSISTANCE can be run with either Pro or Home as the host.
From MS:
To use Remote Assistance, you will need:
• Two computers running Microsoft Windows XP Professional or Windows XP Home Edition. The computer receiving assistance and the computer providing assistance must both run Windows XP.
• Both computers must be connected via a network or the Internet.
• Windows Messenger must be installed on both computers.Michael J

Ahh.. THANKS..! I guess I am confused on the Microsoft Remote Thing.
I tried to stay away from the Microsoft Messenger because it had so many security holes and it is needed for the Microsoft remote package, from what I did read.
I'll have to check this out again and re-evaluate..!
THANKS for all the help.!

Messenger and Windows Messenger are two entirely differnt things. Confusing isn't it?
