My friend has a PC that won't connect to the Internet. We were adding a NIC. Tried 2 different NICs, different slots, removed Norton (thinking it might be locking out the connect), the PC show an alert when the Network cable is unplugged. Also we can't ping any servers. It also tries to connect to a microsoft site, instead of the "Default" HP that is set up... Any Thoughts...
Thanks
Rick A.

Thanks
Rick

Is it getting an IP, or is there a static one set incorrectly. Open up a command prompt and type ipconfig /all, then post your results.

I like long walks, especially when they are taken by people who annoy me.

When I type Ipconfig /all or ipconfig, It just returns a message that says something about a "Configurator" and that's it... Doesn't give any info....

Thanks
Rick

Searching an error message on google is always my first step whenever I encounter one, be it a BSOD or any other kind.

If that yields nothing, then I hit a forum like this one (yep, that's how I found Computing.Net many years ago....researching a problem) and ask my questions. Of course, if I want an answer, I include the full error message, not just a message that says something about a "Configurator"...."

So, you may want to try writing down the exact, full, error message and then do a google search. If that yields nothing, try changing the search to parts of the error message. If you still get nothing, try the same searches on microsoft's knowledge base or post the full error message back here.

When I ping 127.0.0.1 I get replies... When I ping www.google.com, "I get "ping request couldn't find host www.google.com. Please check name and try again." When I type IPconfig I get "Windows IP Configurator" and that's it....When I type netstat, I get No Active Connections" When I unplug the network cable I get an alert that the network cable is unplugged. I also get the top light on the NIC, but never the bottom light or "ACT" light... Any suggestions??

Thanks
Rick

I ran a search on google and found someone on a different forum having your same problem. Make sure you have all the drivers/correct drivers installed as that could be your problem.

Like Curt said google is your best friend when you have a problem.

Here is the forum I found a little bit of info on http://www.techsupportforum.com/net...

Sounds like you're missing either some drivers or you don't have the TCP/IP protocol stack installed or something.

if the loopback ping did not give any results, there is a problem with the TCP/IP stack and Winsock.try to do a repair with these things.

since you guys tried different NICs, if you are sure that the winsock and TCP/IP were not corrupted, try to check the functionality of the slots through your pc manufacturer if it is working.

If you, if you could return, don't let it burn, don't let it fade.
