On a small network, one of the PCs will NOT find the default getway. This PC is running Windows 98 (plain.....NOT SE).
Here's the deal:
The DSL Modem is serving as the DHCP Server and is plugged into a router client port.
The router has DHCP disabled (so the modem can do it).
However, this one PC, set to "obtain IP address automatically" WILL get an IP address, but it keeps grabbing the router's IP (not the modem's) as the defualt Gateway.
It is therefore able to connnect to the network, but CANNOT access the Internet. I've tried setting it statically, but that, for some reason, knocks the network printer offline and jams stuff up other places.
All other PC's have the nics set to auto and are doing fine, even a Win98SE box. It's just this ONE.
I don't know if it's the Win98 OS, the NIC, or Drivers. Will reload/update the drivers soon. But...
Was wondering if this is a KNOWN issue with Win98 (plain, NOT SE)?
Any help appreciated.
PS I'm simply not able to upgrade the machine to another OS, for various reasons.

"The router has DHCP disabled (so the modem can do it)."
Unless your ISP is providing multiple ip addresses you are incorrectly configured. Read the router manual for the proper setup.
This has nothing to do with 98 being the OS

Well, the DSL modem has a DHCP server option built in. You can turn it on or off in the settings.
It's an Alcatel modem.
Anyway. The problem seemed to fix itself. Perhaps all the PCs on the network needed to be shut down for that last older one to get a properly assigned IP.
When I went in this AM to check it (all PC's were OFF last night) it was pulling web pages like nothing was ever wrong, plus, it's network settings are all correct - it had grabbed the correct device as the default gateway.
