This forum seems to be the closest one to ask my question: how to connect to and operate my home PC from my work PC and vice versa? When I entered my home PC IP address, a box asked me for a name and password. How may I establish both?

What software are you using to connect to your home PC - remote desktop? If so, then you need to enter the username and password of an account on your home PC which has administrator privledges, or you can go to the Remote Tab of system properties and manually add access for accounts that don't have admin priv. But, the account must have a password set in order to connect.

Thank you Michael J.
I do not use any SW, as far as I know, - I simply enter the address of my home PC into the address bar when I am at another PC and a dialog box pops up "enter user name and password". How could I create them?

If you are entering an IP addres into an address bar, that address bar is part of some software. If you mean Internet Explorer's address bar then the prompt you get can be from many different things, web server, ftp server, terminal server, etc.
So, what are you running on your home computer that is causing that prompt. Also are you running XP Home or Pro?

Thanks again!
Both PCs run Windows XP Pro and I do use IE. Tomorrow I will be at my work PC and try to see if that dialogue box has any name on it.

If you are entering in your home IP address into IE and are getting a dialog box for a username and password, I think that is probably the remote admin login for your router. Either that or you have a web or ftp server running on your home computer.
Since you are using XP Pro, my advice would be to enable Remote Desktop on your home computer. There are many posts on this forum on how to set it up - just do a search.

I typed "administrator" for the name and my password below and got a blank page - my home PC was off at the time. So, tomorrow I leave my PC on and try again. I let you know the result.

OK, if you are getting prompted for a username and password when typing the IP, while the computer is off, then the prompt you are getting is almost assuradly for your router.
Here is what you need to do. On your home computer, go to System properties and on the Remote tab enable Remote Desktop. You will need to have an account with administrator priveledges (with a password) on that machine or you can add a limited access account to the RD access list on that page as well.
You will then need to access your router's configuration and forward port 3389 to the internal IP address of your home computer.
Then from a remote computer you will start Remote Desktop (Start/Programs/Accessories/Communication/Remote Desktop) and then enter the external IP address of your router (the same one you've been using). If the computer you are using to connect with does not have the Remote Desktop application, MS has downloads for other Windows Operating Systems - I think there is even one for the MAC.

Is the IP address that you are referring to as your home IP 192.x.x.x? If so, that is a private IP address. You are probably getting the username and password prompt from a PC within your work's network.
Hope this helps.
