hi i am trying network my win xp pc(ip:10.0.0.1) to my housemates emac(ip:10.0.0.2) running os 9. i have connected the two using cat 5 crossover and the windows pc says the connection is present but i cant see the mac. when i ping the mac from the pc i get "request timed out."
is there a way of connecting the two without the expensive software or a router. we'd like to share files and ultimately share my adsl connection.

Macs are poo. But uh, I don't think you can share files over a router (at least I can't figure out how to on mine), so buying one of those won't solve your problem.

You need to have "File Services for Macintosh" installed. However, it's not available for XP; MS rquires you to have one of the server editions (NT, 2000, 2003). If you want to use third party software, you could try: PC MACLAN For Windows NT/2K/XP
I've never used it but it says that it will do what you're asking.

BTW, a DSL router will allow you to share the Internet connection; it's the file sharing that's going to give you trouble.

i've heard elsewhere that a proxy server might might allow the mac to connect through my pc but i dont know how to configure this? any ideas? the internet connection is now my main priority because aparently it quite straight forward to share smaller files via ftp.
