I'm trying to add another PC to the network in work. When built, I gave it the same IP address as the PC it was replacing. To test it I used the exsisting network point on the wall and the internet/network worked fine. I then moved to another office and someone else has my old network point and their new PC now has my old IP address. I have assigned my PC with a new IP in all the relevent places (hosts, properties etc)(been told it can be anything between 142.159.1.111 and 142.159.1.199 and will automatically be reconised) and I have installed a new cable direct from the hub/router into my PC (no wall box). Now the 3 lights light up on the router to the corrisponding socket (no18), my PC reconises its connected but its not recieving any data, only sending. I have changed my IP back to my old one and it justs sends a message to the new guys computer (guy with my old IP and network connection). Any help will be glady apprieciated as ive been trying to get it to work all day! (if I run the same new cable (from the same port'18') to a PC next to mine, that PC does the same! Its not the cable as ive tested it from a working wall socket into my PC and internet/network works 100%. hope you understand and can advise! NICK

Sound like you've a duff socket.

To test take your PC to a already functionming socket and connet to existing cable. If OK connet with new cable, if OK then connect another machine that works to socket where you have a problem if that doesn't work. Then you need to check wiring from hub to socket.

Thanks matey

I've taken the plug (the one on the new cable which is running straight to my machine) out of the hub and plugged it into a working wall socket and the PC works 100% on the network. This proves the cable is ok. Ive also tried every spare socket in the hub (all 9 of them) and this doesnt cure the problem. I've even put the plug in socket5, which is the socket taking the plug for the working wall socket mentioned just now.(this would suggest the cable (I KNOW lol) but its definatley not!

Does the hub have to be set up to recieve my machine on a new IP? I'm assuming its plug & play as long as you change the IP in hosts and TCP Properties.

Its really baffled me cos its definatley not the cables, and I cant see all 9 ports being faulty whilst the other 21 are working fine.

Might try re-installing the network card and tcp stuff when i go back to work in the morning. Cheap-skate boss wont pay for a tech to come out and do it!

....another stressful day for me 2morrow....

You need to use testing methods that isolate whether its the hub, wiring, or just this pcs nic.

If you connect presently working pcs [hub->wall wiring->patch from wall to pc->pc] to these ports do they continue to work?
This will confirm or deny if the problem is with the hub ports.

If you connect this pc to the patch cable coming out of the wall to a working pc does it work? If so then pc and wiring is OK. If not odds are its the pcs nic/ipconfiguation.

Hubs just pass data thru and having nothing to do with the protocols like ip.

Make sure the hub port speed matches the nic port speed by manually setting both [if a managed hub] or just the pcs nic. Don't use autonegociate.
