Just moved to a new apt and got cable internet installed. I can't get the connection to work on my PC even though it works on my gf's Mac laptop both directly connected and via wireless signal from our router. The Local Area Connection on my PC claims to be connected but doesn't send or receive any packets and can't find an IP address or anything. When I try to run the router setup on my pc the program tells me it can't connect to the router and to check my ethernet adapter. It claims to be working and I've even tried a new ethernet adapter and a different PCI slot on the pc.

I've repeatedly checked all the connections and spent an hour on the phone with Linksys tech support only to have the guy tell me my tcp/ip port is faulty and to contact my hardware provider. Since this is a 5 year old pc that's not really possible. Any ideas on what could be causing this?

Another tech support guy talking out of his arse. You should have asked him which one, there are over 64,000 of them. TCP/IP ports are virtual ports. They only exist in software. Sod all to do with hardware.

First thing to do is go to a command prompt and type ipconfig.

That should display your IP address and gateway address. If that checks out try type ping 127.0.0.1. If you get a response from that then the TCP/IP stack is working properly and the NIC is installed and working.

Next ping the gateway address. If there is no gateway address, then your network card needs to be configured.

thanks for the reply. I figured he was trying to get me off the phone but didnt know enough to call him out on it. Unfortunately I've tried the ipconfig and it gives me IP and Subnet Mask oof 0.0.0.0 and no DNS or Default Gateway. Any other ideas?

What did ping 127.0.0.1 produce. That should work even without an IP address.

The lack of anything else would indicate a configuration problem.

Go to Network Connection and click the TCP/IP connection. Click Obtain IP address automatically as well Obtain DNS server automatically. Make sure the the router is connected. The link light on both the NIC and router should be lit. Re-boot.

If that doesn't produce an IP address then you defiantly do have a hardware problem.

I pinged 127.0.0.1 and that worked. I've had everything setup to detect automatically without any luck and have rebooted and checked connections quite a few times. Not sure where to go from here.

Does your pc have a wireless card? If so, have your tried connecting wireless. You said that mac and pc are directly connected, my guess is that you have used the same rj45 cable that the mac is using on your pc?

PC doesn't have a wireless card, but I will pick one up if you think that would work as opposed to trying the wired approach.

Yeah, I've tried the same rj45 cable on the Mac and PC and it works on the Mac and not on the PC.

Use ipconfig /all on the xp machine. Compair it to Mac's command. I believe it is ifconfig en0 -a or something like that.

It sounds that your nic is no longer working. I would get a 15$ wireless card. If it works with the wireless and you dont want it wireless, then you can bring back the wireless card back and get a nic.
