I want to connect both pc & laptop to my dsl connection, but how exactly?
I have looked round the internet to try and learn how, but i am more confused now than when i started! i realy need some help.
I think i need a router and i dont want to be able to brouse files between computers, just share the internet connection.
Any help is much needed and greatly appreciated

I think you have 2 choices:

1.) Since you have a USB modem you could get a wireless router and a wireless PCMCIA Ethernet card. Hardwire the router to the machine with the modem and using Internet Connection Sharing to the laptop with the PCMCIA card.

2.) Obtain a wireless DSL modem/router and 1 PCMCIA card. Remove the USB modem, hardwire the PC to the modem router and connect the laptop to the router wirelessly. To me this is the best solution because:
a.) you have the router as a hardware firewall using NAT
b.) you do not need to run ICS on the PC thus saving resources and CPU usage
c.)Both comps can connect to the Internet independently (with ICS in option 1 the PC must be on for the laptop to go to the Internet.)

There is a 3rd alternative if you are willing to run a cable through the house to connect the PC with the laptop but I wouldn't recommend it for obvious reasons.

There are many sites on the net giving more details but I am also sure a local supplier could help you out with the 'gory' details.

Post back if you want a more detailed explanation.

Cheers and good luck

thanks for the detailed response docmemory, things are a lot clearer now,
i think the second choice is the way i`m gonna go.
What do you thing about this wireless DSL modem/router?
(its just over half way down the page)

Netgear DG834G 54Mbps Wireless ADSL Modem/Router/Switch/Firewall (NW-017-NG)

Also i gather that a PCMCIA card is used to pick up the signal from the router, there is a sellection
HERE
Should i just go for the cheapest one?

Thanks again for your time and effort, i would be lost without your input ;-)

NetGear, Linksys and D-Link are all good brands. The Netgear router you have chosen sems pretty good. I tend to use D-Link myself but chiefly due to price I can get them for. Regarding the PCMCIA card I would definitely go for the same brand as the router you get. 'Theoretically' you don't have to but in my experience it smooths the way substantially.

If you go for the router you mentioned above I think I would go for the:
Netgear WG511 54Mbps Wireless PC Card 32-bit CardBus (NW-009-NG)
I think it would be the best option for your proposed setup.

Glad I could help! It's good to get the thanks.

Cheers
