when i console into my cisco 2600 router it goes directly to the 'password:' prompt; the 'router>' prompt never appears. i don't know any of the passwords so i've tried some of the password recovery/bypassing techniques from the cisco site but to no avail. it's been replaced on the network so there's no need to recover the router in its current state. i'm willing to re-install the ios but i'd really like to use most of the current configuration. any suggestions for password bypassing or easy-to-follow tftp instructions?

thanks adam, i have tried this approach and it didn't seem to work. it might be that i change the enable secret password, but since i don't know the enable password, i can't check. the thing that gets me is that i get the password: prompt immediately after rebooting the system, there is no router> prompt. i'm not sure what i'm doing wrong.

I believe you access the router from console and router ask you for console password. If you only changed enable password, then you are missing console password. Repeat the process and this time change the console password too.
line console 0 password XXXX
Note: If you are using hyperterminal from NT machine, Break key does not work. Download new version/software from web.
