one-way pings tried Firewall

September 6, 2009 at 04:55:04
Specs: Windows 7, Quad Core G0 @ 2.4Gh

I am studying for my CCNA and set up a little network as follows;

(S=switch, R=router)

routing is all correct, I can ping from laptop to my mainpc but not from mainpc back again

My main pc is running win7 (i have disabled the firewall) and even run

cmd > netsh firewall set icmpsetting 8 enable.

like i said I can ping one way but not another so I know routing is correct and have carried out traceroutes.

any ideas?

Something is obviously blocking the ping replies.

If it were me, I'd start one device at a time by plugging my PC into the device closest to the laptop and see where it stops replying.

If it stops there, then you know it's either the switch or your Windows 7 computer.

worked it out! i was connected to the internet via my usb dongle, if i disable it pinging through my network is fine, therefore i have come to realise you can only use the ping command when connected to one network.
