Hi there,
A recent power surge meant I've had to replace my old router / modem and line filters. Unfortunately, now I can not seem to connect my wireless printer to the new router. I have a Brother MFC-685CW printer and followed all of the set up instructions to the end, which resulted in "successfully connected". But it isn't.

The new router is a DSE wireless ADSL Router 802.11g 4-port (XH9950).

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Love the site, thanks.

Did you give the printer a static IP address? Can you ping it? Can you open the web interface?

Hi there,

I'm not sure if I was asked to give the printer a static IP address or even what that means and therefore I probably didn't.

Sorry, what do you mean by 'ping it"? I obviously don't know much !

I can open the web interface to the router if that's what you meant.

Cheers.

That's good, if you can open the web interface to the printer but I guess you didn't do it by putting it's IP address in the address bar of the browser. Anyway, the IP address should be listed in the configuration. Make a note of it, then open a command prompt, (start, run, type cmd and press enter) type ping 192.168.x.x or whatever the complete IP address is. See if you get a reply.

So far, so good. You can ping it and you can open the web interface. Go to start, printers and faxes. Do you see the printer there and does it say ready? If it does, right click on it and left click on properties. Click print test page. Does it print?

Two more questions: Is the firewall enabled? Is WEP enabled?

Hi there,

The printer appears but it doesn't say Ready. WEP isn't enabled and the fire wall is. I disabled the firewall yesterday to try and get it to work but to no avail.

Thanks for your help so far,
Lisa.

Go to the Brother's web site and look for updated drivers. The printer has to say ready.

OK, the printer now says ready but it won't print a test page.

Firewall is enabled but WEP is not enabled.

I can print journals etc. straight from the printer, so that part is working.

I tried to remove my printer ports to reinstall them but couldn't find them on device manager.

Sorry for the delay and thanks for all your help so far.

Cheers !

The ports in the printer properties, not in the device manager. Right click on the printer, left click on properties and ports. It should be installed on a TCP/IP port, not on a local port, since it has an IP address.

I would search for an updated driver first.

I have installed a new driver from the Brother website and the printer now says ready but still won't print.
