Is a Null modem cable just like using an USB transfer cable? If not, what is the difference?

No it's not. and the difference is a null modem is much slower. But compared to a network "patch" cable, they're both so slow I'd shoot myself before using either to save myself the aggravation.

Do yourself a favor, buy a crossover cable to directly connect two PC's and use that instead.
