Null Modem Cable not recognised

I am trying to connect a computer with Xp to a computer with 98 using a Null Modem Cable. Once the cable is connected to the computers what do I do? It didn't recognise the cable searching for network connections or new hardware. Also, I'm not sure which ports to put it into, will any cable port work? or does it have to be connected to the network card?

Although now my question is how do I setup a direct connection in 98 and make the computer a guest?

You really need to get the hang of using GOOGLE to search, all these questions/answers have been around since windows 95, yes 12 years:
