Novel 3.12 server stop communicatio

March 29, 2009 at 16:12:26
Specs: Windows XP
I need some help with Novel 3.12 server. Old serve had HD problem so I replaced it with new "backup" server which was prepared for such circumstances. New server is working fine but every two hours it is loosing connection with network. Server itself does not show any message just all workstation are disconnected. After restarting server everything is ok, next two hours. I thought something wrong is with network card - I took one from old server, still this same. Can someone help me with that problem???

How have you installed the backup server?
You might have problems, by setting up the new server from an existing backup of the old server.
So there are possibly other network cards in the new server.

Please send a reply, if you solved the problem !!!

The Backup Server(system) was installed many years ago, on separate network, created for installation and testing - but this server never was tested for longer than an hour. This server did not have any data on it. Yes it has two network card, but only one is used and old server also has two network card but only one was used. So all I did was disconnecting old server, connecting new one and copying data from a backup file. Also I did create new users. This was an idea about backup server from very beginning, when this backup server was created.

Is the old server still on the network?
Is this netware server properly licensed [view thru monitor utility]?

No, old server is disconnected. Monitor does not show anything, it is working like no problem ex.
Or, maybe I don't know where to look for problems.

You can't have two netware servers running on the same wire with the same licenses. I was wondering how you managed to not run into this since I doubt you bought different licenses for the two servers.

How many licenses do you have?
How many clients do you have?

Next time clients lose access to the server go to the server and ping one of the client ips. Is ping successful?

Old server is disconnected - I'm using only one server this same time - I have 50 user lic. and 5 users on network. I'm not using TCP/IP.

That's right 3.12 did not support tcp/ip natively.

You would need to run ipxping instead of ping. Unfortunately you can only run ipxping from the server.

ipxping a workstation from the server when things are working and again when they are not.

One thing to check in the servers bios is that power saving has been set to disabled. You don't want the hardware turning off stuff like the nic card to save power.

I checked BIOS and disabled powersaving option but it did not help.
Do you think it is licensing issue???? We have 1 License(one set of diskets) for 50 users. Do I need to move license from old to new server???

No, when the old server is not running, you'll get no license issue.
Have you checked, that the same patches has been installed to this server?

Please send a reply, if you solved the problem !!!

Yes, I did compare a lot of files and I'm loading them in this same order, only difference in autoexec.ncf is in amout memory registered and network card driver.

"you'll get no license issue"

I have yet to see a confirmation the licenses are loaded. This was one of the things to look at in Monitor.

We also still don't know where the break is which is why we need to see the result of a ipxping.

You mean top row, left side of main monitor screen where it shows 50 client licences? - I did not found any other referal to licensing in the monitor.

I don't have ipxping.nlm - do you know from where I can download? - I found few references to this nlm but not file itself.

Left top corner of monitor shows:

NetWare v3.12 (50 user) - 8/12/93

Is this what should be there? Is there some other place in monitor which shows licensing info?

I found ipxping.nlm file I will try it later today

ok,
I did run ipxping. I got network and node numbers from monitor-connection info screen and ipxping shows sent packets growing but received = 0.
This is when connection to server is ok.

it just stop communication, but nothing has been change on ipxping, it still shows growing sent packet and 0 received, and also everything else is empty - Trend column shows "No data".
All, but printserver, "Active Connections" disappeared from Connection Information screen of monitor.

Your nic card binding must be wrong.

Set to 802.2 at both server and clients?

I have all workstation and server on 802.3
here is NIC in autoexec.ncf:

load smc1211 frame=ethernet_802.3 slot=2 name=fast
bind ipx to fast net=4

I will try to switch it tomorrow

I changed it to 802.2 but ipxping does not show anything new. Server is still on network but it does not show any incoming packets.

if you changed from 802.3 to 802.2 you would need to set the same frame type on all pcs.

please post your autoexec.ncf file

no "mount all" which means the disks are not being told to mount. Should be the last item usually.

Normally you don't load install upon boot.

is it a reason why server is cutting out of the network itself ???

At this point I have no idea. I would really need to be at the server console to see what is going on.

If you don't mount drives the clients have nothing to logon to.

When you mentioned the nic stats of no incoming did you get this from Monitor?

I was referring to IPXPING.
There is no mountall command in autoexec.ncf but vol SYS is mounted and this is only vol. on this sever. Users don't have any problems logging to server - all data is accessible - all software is working until server somehow disconnect itself from network. All other network devices are working fine. I have 3 windows servers, few network printers, some windows computers and router/internet gateway. Everything, what is not dependent of Novell server, is working just fine. Just this server every 1.5 to 2 hr is loosing connection to network without any reason or message.

Is the link to the HUB or Switch also lost, or is the link LED still on?

When the server loses the connection, try this command at the server console:
reinitialize system

This will reinitialize the network card with it's settings.

Please send a reply, if you solved the problem !!!

I don't recall the reinitialize system command existed in netware 3x

Good question about nic/hub lites. I would also be curious as to monitor nic card stats during one of these "outages"

I don't see a reason for the reset router command if you only have one nic.

When you watch the system boot up do you see any errors when loading drivers?

That ncf file seems shy in content but it has been 10 years since I worked as a CNE maintaining this version of Netware. I still have a couple of 5x netware servers but NDS is very different than bindery mode which is what 3x is in.

Looks like switching frame to 802.2 helped. Server is up and running this morning. All workstations connecting without any problem. No need to restart it again.

Thank you very much for your help.
