My problem started today when I turned on my PC. It did
not get an IP from the Router (dlink DI-624), instead it got
a 169.x.x.x address... the router CAN see the MAC
address of the PC and assigns an IP, but the PC cannot see
the router (or my powerbook). On the PC LAN status, it
shows sending packets but zero received.

Here is what I have tried unsuccessfully:
reinstall tcp/ip
reinstall NIC drivers
reset all settings
change cables
reset router
run winsockfix and other utilities
run ad-aware and another spyware program
run virus scan
system restore
running knoppix linux to see if i could connect (could not,
but not sure if i could before)
connect directly to the cable modem and nothing still

I have not tried:
reinstall windows or new NIC... I would rather those be
last resort and somehow I doubt windows is the issue...

Is there anything else I could try? It does say that it is
connected at 100 mbps in the tray, but it cannot even
ping anything other than the 169 ip or 127.0.0.1...

Thanks in advance

Sounds like multiple problems.

I would start in the router and check the wan port status. Can you ping the DNS servers from the router? If not you have problems with the cable provider. Reset the modem and a minute later the router.

Once you have confirmed you want wan connectivity you can move on to the local dhcp. Start by unassociating any ip addresses and mac addresses. This is dhcp "reserving" ip and some times it gets messed up. From the wkst do a ipconfig / renew. See if you get a correct ip address.

The 169.x.x.x is a iana auto assigned ip address. this happens when a dhcp request is made but no answer recieved. Bad cable or dhcp server are the usual reasons.

the internet works fine.. my mac is getting on the network
and internet no problem...

I changed the range of IP's and the router reassigned a
new IP to the PC's MAC address, but the PC never gets the
IP

I have tried new cables and different ports on the router.. I
am going to get a used NIC from someone, hopefully
today, to see if that works... Like I said the PC is showing
packets sent but zero received.

If you are at a total loss when the NIC card dosnt work, you might try a firmware upgrade from DLink's site. This might fix your problem.

It looks like a hardware problem, since you can ping your loopback address, taht usually means that TCP/IP is installed and functioning. THe packets taht are being sent are your DHCP request, they are being answered by your router, and the router sets an IP for it, but since you arent getting anything back it could be the sending side of your router, or the receivinf side of your NIC.

And since I have tried ports on the router that I know work
just fine, most likely the NIC... I will post back after I find
another card to test with.
