Not finding IP address

I have 2 computer (win98se & win95b) networked with NIC & crossover cable, everything works great except I can't "find computer" using it's IP address (dynamic) it has no problems finding it when pinging IP address from DOS or using the name in windows. (98 system is connected to the net (dial-up modem) but I have no internet sharing as I don't need it. I had PCAnywhere 10, working between the 2 computers then I upgraded it to 10.5 and thats when all the problems started...I have since remove PCAnywhere off both computers, they are working great except the finding by IP address in windows problem.

You can't find your ip addresses because you don't have one on either. Your dialup is getting a ip address via dhcp from your ISP. This is seperate and different from your nic card addresses. DHCP means your computers are expecting upon bootup to contact a server running the dhcp service. You don't have a server. Solution is to put in two addresses like 10.10.10.2 on one and .3 on the other with subnet masks of 255.0.0.0 within the nic properties/tcpip properties. Not dhcp but static addresses. Your dialup will still work since it is seperate from the nics.

you have miss understood me or I haven't put it clearly.. I have given the 2 NIC address using (TCP/IP) protocal (192.168.x.x/255.255.255.0)and I can ping them in DOS, also I can find the computer in windows by typing the comuter name, but if I use find computer and use the IP address I have for the NIC it doesn't find them. The DIAL-Up has nothing to do with it...thats completly separate. The network between the 2 computers works perfectly it's just that I cant find it with the IP address. which I need to find that way with some software I'm trying out.
