Hi all,

I am a student living in a student house together with six other students. We all share the same internet connection on a 5Mbps cable.

Lately some of my housemates have discovered an array of p2p progs which utterly and completely destroy the number of connections any one computer on the network other than theirs can make. I've tried to convince them to set their torrent progs at an acceptable level (max 100 connections per dl task (still too high but he...)...No such luck. Besides going out and finding new, descent housemates, is there any way i can remotely cap the amount of connections computers (which i can't physically access) make on the internet??

We usually get around a thousand connections a minute, when my "buddies" dl. it's 20!!!

Any advice much appreciated!

I would first off get a a very good antivirus and anti-spyware program, because with all this p2p activity, something is bound to get loose on the network sooner or later.

And no, there is no way to control thier bandwidth usage. A managed switch or server could do it, but then that could be easily circumvented and would have to be under the control of one person only. Don't think that would fly. The only other way is to get a separate broadband account and connection.
Who pays for the connection now? One person, or is it shared? If your roomies are that inconsiderate in other areas, I would think about moving. :-)
