NETWORK CONNECTION PROBLEM
When I try to connect to the other computer, I get the following error message;
"name" is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions. Access denied."

I have a desktop and a wireless laptop computer, both running Windows XP.
The desktop is connected to SMC router. The Router is connected to a Gnet DSL modem.
I have no problem connecting to the Internet with both computers.

Both computers are partitioned into Drive C: containing all Applications, and Drive D: containing the Data files. Drive D: are set to; share this folder on the network and Allow network users to change my files. Windows Firewall is disabled. The Internet connection is DSL

Computer description: For the Desktop, “Desktop” and for the Laptop, “Laptop”.
Computer Name: for the Desktop, “MAIN” and for the Laptop, “MDG”.
The Workgroup is: MShome".
File and Printer Sharing: is turned ON.

They used to be able to see each other and I was able to exchange files, but not anymore.

When I go to My Network Places, nothing is listed. Then if click “Folders”, and then click on View Workgroup computers”, both computers are listed. Then if I double click on the current drive, and then click Folders again to show the double screen in Explorer, it list Mshome with both computers, the way it should be. But if I click on the other computer, the above listed error message shows, and I can not access the other computer on the network.

I tried to disable Norton Anti Virus and Zone Alarm on both computers The results were the same.

I can ping the Laptop from the Desktop, and ping the Desktop from the Laptop.

Please help me solve this problem, Any ideas on what to do??
Thank you

Rule #1 Good computers don't go down.
Rule #2 There is no such thing as a good computer.

I had the same problem recently; a Google search turned up a myriad of links, including the following: click here. The following post by gianmarco in the above link provided what proved to be the fix in my case:

Hi.
I had the same problem and it really annoyed me. At last I found a great solution for it on the internet. It works with most XP Pro and Home Editions.
1. Start > Run > regedit.exe
2. Go to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
SYSTEM
CurrentControlSet
Control
Lsa
3. Change the value of a key called "restrictanonymous" to 0 instead of 1 or 2.
4. Don't change "restrictanonymoussam" value.
5. The value should be REG_DWORD and Hexadecimal Base. (That's the default for that key)
6. Restart your computer and access the resources on that PC, it should work properly.

I made the change and solved my problem. The next time I boot up, the value changes back to 1 and I have to make the change back to 0. How do you make the change from 1 ro 0 permanent?
