Hello everyone!

Hey, I have a question here... I'm downloading like 2 really big files from BitTorrent (all legal; don't get paranoid). Altogether, it's about 10 to 20 KB/s.

I have a 3 Mb/s connection; which usually downloads at 384 KB/s and loads pages blazing fast. 'ping google.com' usually gives me an average round-trip time of 26ms.

However, when downloading the files I mentioned above, pages take like 3 minutes to fully load, and the round-trip in ping is 1942ms... What the [F-word]?

The question is; is this normal? Like, 384 - 20 = 364, shouldn't I be left with 364 KB/s of speed? I tried downloading something from other site and it was at like, 10 KB/s...

Thanks! ;-)

loading pages is very different from downloading files. Your connection could be a GIG but your drive access will be the limiting factor. As is the hard drive on the senders side.

I have to assume "10 to 20 KB/s" is a mistype and you meant MB's. 20meg isn't huge these days :-)

I would suggestion you malware/spyware scan and do a bandwidth test just to make sure everything is as it should be.

Give a person a fish, they eat for a day. Suggest they internet search and they learn a skill for a lifetime.

Don't forget too, the busier the server you're downloading from, the slower your download will be. You have no way of knowing how many other people are connected to that same server and also downloading at the same time you are.

Oh and, it's not a matter of paranoid, it's a case of legalities. Most, if not all, of the people that hang in here regularly are professionals and conduct themselves as such. Which means, we don't deal in illegal software, videos and music. Not to mention this is a "tech help" site, not a hacker/warez site.

Didn't think of that one...

No, I meant a download rate... Like, it's downloading at 10 kilobytes a second. :-P

Yes; I knew that... That same file usually gets to me at my full speed.

Oh and, it's not a matter of paranoid, it's a case of legalities.

No, it really isn't illegal; it's Japanese-only stuff that we can't get here in America otherwise... Or in any other country for that matter as it's only a TV show with no DVD releases. And remember I need the subtitled version also. :-P

I'm a programmer myself, and I plan on selling my stuff later on in my life, so I won't pirate software because I believe in that Confucius' saying about not doing to others what you don't want done to you. ;-)

"No, it really isn't illegal"

How can you be certain you are not downloading 'intellectual property' without the author's consent?

Not that I care - but your claim of innocence seems unlikely

Anyhow - the speed of a bittorrent download is governed by many factors, chief of which is the seed/leech ratio. There is no centralized server, and file segments can originate from points all over the world.

Hard drive access is many, many times faster than any network transfer rate, and hardly a limiting factor

I'm not one of those who think Bill Gates is the devil. I simply suspect that if Microsoft ever met up with the devil, it wouldn't need an interpreter.

To be honest; I don't really care if it's intellectual property, all I know is I'm not moving to Japan just to watch a better version of Power Rangers. Plus learning Japanese... No thanks.

1. Why does everyone have to turn against me in forums? Is it the smileys? 'Kay then. It's not the first time, I'm an idiot for continuing to use them.
2. How does it seem unlikely?

Yes, I was wondering about that...
