I have a DHCP assigned IP from my ISP. I'm on ADSL. I use a Dlink DI-604 highspeed internet router (VPN passthrough capable) to connect to my home PC from work. I use Remote Desktop on my XP PC at work to connect. I have the RD port on the router set to be forwarded to my PC at home.
I can do this quite easily because my ISP leases the same IP to me all the time. Most places do it this way although there are a few that change the IP's frequently. My best friend, who lives in another province has DSL and every time he boots up he gets a new IP address. This doesn't make what you want to do impossible, only inconvenient as you will have to check your IP each morning before leaving for work and leave the PC running all day to keep that same IP address.

Well then, you may have to break down and pay the extra for a static IP.

I have used no-ip.com for 2 years now and it's performance has been flawless. It's just a little piece of software that runs on your computer all the time. You set a variable for how often you want to check for an IP change. If the IP is different than what is on their servers, it updates it - else it does nothing. You pick your host name in the FQDN. Example - <your choice>.no-ip.com.
