Subject: Nobody can ping me OS: Vista PremiumCPU/Ram: 2/2Model/Manufacturer: Dell |
Comment: I was trying to set up remote desktop on vista 64. There was a workaround so that premium can accept remote desktop connections but for some reason it won't work. I figured the first step would be seeing if I could even be PINGED which I can't. I have dmz on my router and I turned off my firewall and nobody can ping me. What am I forgetting?

Reply: (edit)Forget Ping! Dunno what book keeps saying to try that. If you can access the internet then the IP configuration is working for all that ping would tell you. Normally I would never suggest to use DMZ nor disable a firewall. Put that back on pronto. You have to have a user that has a logon password and that user has to have the ability to allow rdp. You have to enable RDP. You can not offer a premium desktop as it doesn't offer terminal services. http://www.winsupersite.com/showcas... You can connect to a xp pro or supported vista version with mstsc as long as the correct ports are forwarded and open on each side and the correct way open. Might have to use a secure vnc or pcanywhere or another type of remote desktop. I read it wrong and answer it wrong too. So get off my case you goober.

I don't know that he can access the internet. I don't even know if internet is even hooked to this network. I also don't know how he's connecting - he could be connecting through a DNS address for all I know. lesstjake, could you be more specific?

Reply: (edit)I can access the internet fine, I'm talking from my laptop right now. I have terminal services and all that, I did the workaround to allow Premium to have Remote Desktop Connection. I forwarded 3389 on both my router and my firewall AND i've allowed remote connections...I called up linksys and they even told me to use a static ip address

Reply: (edit)and I've enabled RDP and im trying to logon with my own username and password...i know that I can't have me logged on and try to logon remotely but I should at least have me get kicked off, not have the thing time out.

Reply: (edit)I haven't tried file sharing, I can't see any of the other computers on the network. I assumed its because I'm running vista and they're not. Maybe i have to check workgroups or something

Reply: (edit)Those are both good, although very prone to hackers. If you're using it on a private network, you should be fine. I've used both UltraVNC and TightVNC, and I like them both. I've never tried RealVNC. All I can say is take your pick. Although it was suggested above to not try pinging since your internet works, I would try anyway if it was me JUST TO BE SURE. Ping the computer you're having problems with, and vice versa.

Reply: (edit)If you decide to continue to fiddle around with RDP, make sure that your Vista PC and the other PC is on the same workgroup. Also, BE SURE that the ports are open in both directions... http://whatsmyip.org/ports/ Use the custom port test, and enter 3389. Also, try creating a new user account with administrator priviledges on the Vista PC.
