Subject: No TCP/IP address, HELP!OS: Windows XP HomeCPU/Ram: AMD Athlon 2500+ 1.83 GHz |
Comment: I had to replace my hard drive, since I can not get an IP address. I get an error message saying Failed to query TCP/IP settings of the connection. Cannot proceed. I am totally lost and need to get this fixed. When I went to Device Manager, everything under the section Other Devices has a yellow ? beside it. One of these things being the Ethernet Controller, I have no idea what I have done,or how to fix the problem, the help section does not do anything but confuse me, any help at all would be appreciated.

Reply: (edit)How would I go about finding the correct Ethernet Controller? I tried to do the download driver button, and it told me that it could not be found. What other way is there to find the driver for the controller? We were trying to set both of our computers on a home network when the hard drive fried on us. I am not very computer savvy, so sorry to be so slow on this. Any help is appreciated.

Reply: (edit)Is your network card built into the motherboard? Whatever fried your hard drive may have taken out your network connector as well. If the network card is a separate add-on, you should have a CD with driver for it; otherwise the network driver should be on the install CD for the motherboard itself. You should go into Device Mgr, uninstall the network card, and reboot. Your Found New Hardware wizard should let you know that it has found the network card (unless it is damaged), and you will need to load the driver from the appropriate CD. If there is a hardware problem with the network card, you may have to purchase a new one (or get a new motherboard ... easier to add a separate card, though).

Reply: (edit)Is your Computer a Brand Name Computer like Dell/Compaq/HP/Toshiba etc etc? If the answer is "yes", either use the driver disc they have provided or if not with you go to the manufacturer's Tech support webpage and find and dowload the Driver for the Network Adapter (Network Interface Card(NIC) or Network Card ) and Install per their instructions found there. If you want help in getting the driver, post the EXACT name of the Computer as displayed on its case in the Forum. If it is Custom built PC, then we need to know the EXACT name of the Network Inteface Card if it is an Add-on card installed in the PCI slot of the Motherboard.
If it is an Integrated NIC, the EXACT name of the Motherboard is required to get the Driver from Motherboard Manufacturer. Sometimes installing and running programs like Belarc Advisor v7.0m or FreshDiagnose will help you to find the name of the device and even the driver download site.Needless to say you have to download and burn the software on to a Disc from a healthy Internet connected Computer with a CD or DVD Burner and reuired Burning software or you can get it via USB Digital drive:-) Hope this helps.
