Have just set up a network between Lappy and desktop using WinXP cd rom, Desktop carnt see laptop and visa versa. can ping each other OK. I have set out below what I have done to try and rectify the situation, but must have missed something major, by the looks of it :-)
SETUP Desktop:
Netcomm PCI Modem connected to phone line 3Com3c900COMBO Ethernet card connected to LAN Port 1 on Billion 5100w
Desktop can ping itself, the router, and the Laptop succesfully Computer browser service started automatic In explorer clicking on My network places reveals MSHome Clicking on MSHOME causes a delay with the message "MSHOME is not accesable You might not have permission to use this network resource a list of servers for the workgroup is currently unavailable" Has Full internet access
Have shared the C drive on desktop Searching for Laptop (in windows search) by name or IP address reveals nothing Have enabled net bios over TCP/IP TCP/IP Installed address 192.168.0.1 Client MS Networks and File and printer sharing installed and checked Sygate firewall disabled ICF Disabled Computer Name different to Laptop GROUP NAME: MSHoME, same as laptop To transfer files at present between Lappy and desktop and visa versa, I use a program called Fastlynx, installed on both PC's, which works by TCP/IP and get an instant connection

Laptop: 802.11b Wireless PCMCIA Card Computer browser service "manual" In explorer, clicking "My network places" shows nothing No "Entire Network" No MSHOME Laptop can ping itself, the router, and the desktop and has Full internet access Have shared the C drive on laptop Searching for Desktop (in windows search) by name or IP address reveals nothing Have enabled net bios over TCP/IP TCP/IP Installed/ address 192.168.0.2 Gateway address 192.168.0.1 Client MS Networks and File and printer sharing installed and checked Sygate firewall disabled, ICF Disabled Computer Name different to Desktop GROUP NAME: MSHoME, same as Desktop Billion 5100w Wireless 4 port Modem/Router (No ADSL Connected) Cheers Chris

Just thought I would reply back to let you know it got sorted.

Because the WINSproxy was set to ON, and the node types were set to UnKnown, it appears that your TCP/IP stack may have been #$%ed with either by a previous user, other software (sygate firewall?), or some corporate network config.

Had to restore the TCP/IP stack in the laptop as it was corrupted, and althogh I enabled Netbios over TCP/IP when I did an ipconfig /all the netbios was still showing as disabled. That was the givaway, and why Lappy could see desktop by name but not the other way around.

Some kind forum member at Billion support sussed it out which i thought was quite good, considering the problem wasnt really with the Modem/router

Cheers Chris
