I have problem with connection on my laptop. Internet works well on computer, but there`s problem when I plug cable in laptop. It is written: "There is no or limited connection". Before that, there is written "Invalid IP". I thought there is problem in laptop, but I reinstalled operation system. After that, everything worked fine until i did not conect internet cable on my computer. How can I fix this problem? Why is there written "Invalid IP"? I am using ethernet connection. Modem: Motorola SB5101E SURFboard Cable modem XP SP2

look at your lan cards properties. In tcp/ip is it set to be automatically assigned?

Once connected physically and you get those messages go to a cmd prompt and type ipconfig /all

Post the results for review.

Have you talked to your ISP? It sounds like the modem isn't properly configured at their end.

'tis the season to be of good cheer. Wishing one and all happy times with family and friends.

Yes, i contacted my internet cable provider. Modem work perfect. Modem has 2 exits, first is ethernet, second is usb.
I use ethernet for PC, everything is ok. But laptop doesnt want to connect to internet. Then I plugged ethernet into laptop, nothing changes.

The laptop isn't getting an ip through DHCP. Does your ISP limit the number of connections you can have? Have you tried rebooting the modem AFTER connecting the laptop using the cable?

I am not sure if ISP limit the number of connections i can have, but i remember that they mentioned that i can have a router if i want more connections. Does this mean anything? My modem is motorola surfboard SB5101E and I dont see any "restart button" on it. How can I restart my modem?
