Hi am with a senior group and cannot for the life of me work this out although I know it will be simple to some of the genuises out there. We have 17 computers on a network here on a coaxial cable. All machines can see themselves but none others. The server can see it self but no others. The only lights working is on the server card. It was working fine last time we used and now isnt so am thinking could it be the server network card?. Please help here. Thanks

Hi Matt,
You need to provide more information so we can help you... but for the time being, I'll assume that your machines are run a flavour of Windows and that when you say "The machines can see themselves but no one else" - means that you open up "Network Neighborhood", you can't see any other machine name in there apart from the machine you are on.
If this is the case, then it sounds like all your machines may be configured for NetBios over IP and the machines themselves do not have an assigned IP address.
Unless you have a DHCP server running ( which may be a good idea if you are thinking of expanding your network in the future - going round 17 machines and manually assigning IP addresses is going to be a pain! ) - then you might want to assign IP addresses to each machine ( starting from say 192.168.0.2 with a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0 should give you enough room your machines ).
If you don't want to use IP traffic over your network and just NetBios traffic, turn off NetBios over IP on each machine and if all machines are on the same local LAN, they should be able to see each other.
Let us know how you get on.
Best regards, James.
