No local area connection

Specs: Windows XP, AMD Athlon 64 3.01 GHz / 4 gigs
Local Area Connection has limited or no connectivity.
Windows could not finish repairing the problem because the following action cannot be completed: Renewing your ip address.

This is a clean install of xp, though the problem preceded the latest install.
The cable works with my laptop (thus my internet access), and I tried a backup cable as well, no luck.
The ethernet port is part of the mobo, not into a pci card.

Buy and install a PCI 10/100 network card. Disable the on-board one in the BIOS Setup utility or in Device Manager to release the IRQ for the new one and to avoid resource conflicts.
