Did you reinstall the driver for the Netwrok Interface Card?

Look in Device Manager and if there is a yellow question mark next to Netwrok Adpator than thats you rproblem.

Yes, you need to install network card driver, after that can only see that local area connection icon. Try to use network card driver CD to do driver installation, if not go to manufacturer website and download the driver. If need more helps, take a look on this network card configuration to get more understanding.
