Let me start with this: I am aware that I have posted this multiple times, however none of the solutions that have been suggested have actually worked. I am looking for a solution other than the winsock reg fix, or running ICW, I need a series of potential problems with their solutions, I am fairly capable with computers and am suprised that i have not been able to figure this one out on my own.
But here goes, for the last time:
I installed a new network card in a windows 98 computer and plugged it into my schools network. The Card is recognized and there are no conflicts however, the computer itself refuses to utilize the internet connection. Ive checked the back of the computer and it lights up, Ive tried uninstalling and re-installing and nothing seems to work. I have client for microsoft networks installed aswell as a tcp/ip protocol. Whenever I double click neighborhood networks all that comes up is "Entire Network". I just dont think the computer is recognizing that it is on a network. There are no proxys, no static IPs, IPs are auto-assigned everytime one boots up the computer, I've also already ran Internet Connection Wizard multiple times, everyone else seems to have no problem just plugging in and being on the internet. I guess my computer doesnt like the idea of free internet and plug and playing. When I run winipcfg it gives me a different IP addy everytime for the auto assign, gives me subnet of 255.255.0.0 and leaves the last value of IP blank, I have my ethernet card selected under the winipcfg as the adapter to use, I just cant get the computer to recognize that there is an avalible internet connection that does not require a login or password. Can someone please help!!!????

You need to configure the card with the settings of your schools network!!! Talk to the Administrator!!! I posted that before in my last post and It should have worked. Doesnt take a rocket scientest to figure that one out.

there are no static IPs or anything to enter its a matter of getting software to recognize what the hardware is providing, I talked to the IT people at my school and they told me to set everything to obtain automatically and automatically detect settings....so what do I do?

So you have run ipconfig and compared the ip address you have to that of the school network? Do you get a school dhcp assigned ip address??? Can you ping the gateway?

It does not sound like you are getting physically connected to the network. If you are getting a address in the 169.x.x.x range this could be the auto assigned ip address windows does and not the one your schools dhcp is providing.

I wouldn't worry about seeing Entire Network since unless you sign into a domain or belong to a workgroup you wouldn't see anything.

Since it seems like you have checked I would check to make sure that the nic speed and the switch/hub speed are compatible.
