New at this forum...posted on XP forum..two very nice member tried to help but I thought this forum might be more appropriate.
I have two computers connected to the internet by an SMC barricade router. The 'main' computer, which the cable modem and router are connected, runs Windows XP. I was surfing the net when suddenly I got the message: 'cannot find server...'. I am not able to connect to the internet on this computer now. Get the usual 'cannot find server....' message (my browser is internet explorer). I can receive email in outlook express on this computer. The other computer connected to this network (running windows 98) is able to connect to the internet.
I restarted the computer...didn't help. I ran network diagnostics and I get the message: Network Adapters failed. When I expanded this messsage, one of the lines read: IPAddress=192.168.2.16 (failed). I don't know what that means! I went into device manager to check the network card and it said device was working properly.I also restored the computer back to the day before when it was working properly. Didn't help either.
This morning I turned everything off, computer, modem, router and plugged back in--still same problem.
Apologies for the length of post...tried to give as much info as possible.
Thanks, in advance.

can you ping a public IP? this step by step troubleshooting may help, http://www.howtonetworking.com/Internet/internetaccess0.htm

You can't rely on device manager to always identify defective hardware. Can you try another NIC or even try re-seating it?

I've had something similar on ME. Rolling back didn't cure it, but restoring the registry to an earleir state did!
Hope this helps
Neil
