some laptops like my d820 have a on/off switch on the side of the laptop for wireless. Some use the function [fn] key and one key with a wireless tower on it to toggle the AP on or off.

thanks gave me the spurt of confidence to minutely check the whole laptop with miroscope and found a little switch on the bottom - cracked it thanks to your kind reply
