Often you have to plug in your router, modem and Ethernet cables in a particular sequence before they will recognize each other properly. For example you have to have the router turned on and connected to cable modem before you can turn on the modem or it will not be able to collect the physical address or assign the IP address to the router. For my particular setup I have to turn on my router, then plug my computers into it, then plug it into my modem, and finally plug in the modems power cord to turn it on. If a vary this ritual at all I will not be able to connect to the Internet.

One useful thing is to find the IP address' of you modem (mine is 192.168.100.1) and router (usually 192.168.0.1 but looks to be in your case 192.168.1.1) and type them into your web browsers URL bar or ping them through command prompt to see if your computer is connected to them.

Good luck.

can you do an IPCONFIG/ALL from command prompt? Check you have DNS server (in your TCP/IP Settings for network card on PC) set to 192.168.1.1 This is important otherwise you will have no DNS resolution, hence not be able to browse the Web. Once checked,
assuming you can ping from your PC to the router PING 192.168.1.1, next check To you have got a connection to the internet by pinging a PUBLIC IP address such as 195.12.1.1 If you get a reply then you are at least connected to the internet. To check that you have DNS, ping a Domain name like: www.google.co.uk You should get a reply from an IP address. If you do this means DNS is working. If it is, open up Internet Explorer and try browsing a site now. If no joy, check you have no Proxy server settings in Internet Explorer by clicking on: Tools, Internet Options,Connections, LAN.

Hope this helps.

I do not know the Cable company that is providing you internet service, but mine (Comcast) requires that I enable 'MAC cloning' in my router for the internet to work.
Basically when you setup your internet service from your PC the MAC address of your PC and Modem are registered with the ISP, when you plugged it into the router the ISP noticed the MAC change (PC->Router) and will not give it access because it doesn't match. By enabling MAC cloning in the router, the router emulates the MAC address of the PC that you setup the router with to the ISP, which should be the MAC address that you registered your modem with. At that point you should be able to receive a global IP from the ISP.
To do this:
Open IE, in the Address feild put 192.168.1.1 and press enter.
This will open a prompt that says 'Username' & 'Password'. Enter the username and password for your router. Default for linksys is normally no username and password of 'admin'.
In my Linksys router, 'MAC Address Clone' is a sub-category under Setup
From there you put a check mark in 'Enable'
Click 'Clone your PC's MAC' and then click 'Save settings'.
Log back into the router, and then go to 'Status'. If your setup in the router is proper as far as if your WAN is configured for your cable, then you should see a
Global IP, Gateway, & DNS. If you see only 0.0.0.0 then turn off your router and plug it back in and relog back into and check again.

yup!
