no connection thru router + hub

I have been having quite a time getting an internet connection through my router + hub. My cable connection goes into a hub in the living room and I get a feed into my room off of that. If I hook the line drom the router directly into my computer it works. but if I try to split the connection again in my room through a hub I cannot get a connection. the line into the hub works, b/c it works on my computer. the port I use to bring the internet into the hub shows no connection when cable plugged in from the internet. The port works though because if I rearrange the wires in the hub, the same port will show a connection to my pc. so all ports, wires, and cables work...but no connection after splitting through hub and running all wizards. renew release (repair connection) does not recognize connection and doesn't work. I've tried everything! Please help!using belkin router and a 4 port netgear hub.

Try connecting your hub to ethernet port #4 and hitting the uplink button.

You failed to read the setup documentation with the router.

Your config of hub then router is incorrect. Your problem is not a physical connection issue but one of your ISP only giving you one ip address. This is why only one machine can get on.

That is why you put the router first then the hub. The routers wan port uses the single assigned ip address. You set the lan side of the router to provide dhcp ip addresses to your pcs. You set the pcs to be dhcp clients.

Doesn't sound like you have configured the router at all and you were expecting just to plug in and work.

the hub was there first. my roomate and i have had no problem, both getting a connection through the router by itself. i recently tried to split the connection in my room with a hub. the existing split at the router works, but when i split again at my pc via hub, the port that the existing line comes int the hub doesn't show a conection from the router. is my router not configued properly? i didn't think I could configure a simple 4 port hub. maybe i'm wrong...

Long winded explanation: TCP/IP networking is hiearchial in nature: Clients and servers. Clients ask for IP Addresses from the DHCP server directly above them in the network.

Within each subset of the netork you can place hubs that REBROADCAST data packets between the server and clients on that subnet but hubs don't PROVIDE IP addresses.

The server at your ISP is set to provide exactly one (1) IP address through their modem. Hooking a hub directly to this means that only one client on this subnet will get that IP Address. It's a first come/first served network, too, so the FIRST client to ask for that IP Address gets it.

A router allows you to create a Local Area Network of local IP Addresses. It acts as a client of the server above it in the net and forwards data packets between the network and its own clients.

To make your LAN work connect the router to your modem. If you have enough ports on it for all your clients you don't need the hub; if you're short connect the WAN port of the hub to one of the LAN ports of the router so its LAN ports will be added to the router's. Set TCP/IP properties on all the clients to "Assign IP Address automatically" and "Use DHCP Server for WINS resolution". Either disable the PCs firewalls or set them to accept local IP addresses in the 192.168.x.x range. XP's firewall is pretty good about detecting what kind of network it's on but you may have to tweak it.
