Specs: Windows XP
Hi guys i have a linksys WRT54G2 and i am in Tanzania. I am trying to set it up with a pppoe connection to an ISP. because they restrict mac addresses, i tried to clone the IP of the router to that of the NIC on the registered computer and also tried to enter a username and password for the pppoe connection. These settings do not work.

I have read that i need to reset the cable modem and turn the router on and off to allow the settings to take effect, but a cable modem is not present in the house, the company has simply laid an ethernet cable from their exchange to the house (the cable required was 60 meters in length) Is there anyway i can get this connection to work WITHOUT resetting the modem??

Many thanks.

I dont think you need worry about resetting the MODEM. If all you have in Ethernet cable coming into your house it means the MODEM is in the exchange and it is the MAC address of the MODEM that the ISP sees.

First try plugging the Ethernet cable directly into the NIC on your computer and see if that works. Reboot the computer and go to command prompt and type ipconfig /all.

If you have IP addresses and a gateway address then it should be working. If not you need to contact whoever has control of the MODEM and get them to do something.

Once that is done you can plug the cable into the router and another cable from the router to computer and then set about configuring the router. Cloning MAC addresses shouldn't be necesarry.
