I think there is not enough information to make an educated guess.

Are these "to" machines sharing an internet connection, connected to a router or directly to a cable modem or perhaps a dial up modem?

"it get 168. etc number" A little too vague. Can you give the etc portion of that number? I would expect a 192.168 etc number or if the DHCP server was down then a 169.254 etc (APIPA) number but not a 168. etc number.

With the limited amount of provided information I would have to suspect that some setting was changed by some means.

Regards,
Bryan

hey bryan,

thanks for a feedback :)
two machines are connected directly. the number on the second machine (the one does not work) is 169.254.113.2 - automatic personal number. firewalls are disabled.

you mentioned that DHCP can be down. what might be the reasons?

hope that gives you required information.

"two machines are connected directly"

Are they connected to each other and sharing an Internet connection (ICS) through one machine or directly to a router?

Please advise how things are connected and to what.

Also, had your setup worked before or is this a new connection?

Regards,
Bryan

yes, sharing internet connection. one machine is connected via usb to adsl modem. another (the one that is not working) is connected to the first and supposed to get an automatic IP through the first one.

yes, this setup has worked just fine for ages.

Try going to Start, Run, msconfig, Services tab to see if DHCP Client is enabled or not.

How are the computers physically connected to each other? Ethernet cable? Is there a link light on both network cards?

To reiterate Bryco's question, what software are you using to share the first computer's Internet connection? ICS, or something else?
