I installed a new network card in a windows 98 computer and plugged it into my schools network. The Card is recognized and there are no conflicts however, the computer itself refuses to utilize the internet connection. Ive checked the back of the computer and it lights up, Ive tried uninstalling and re-installing and nothing seems to work. I have client for microsoft networks installed aswell as a tcp/ip protocol. Whenever I double click neighborhood networks all that comes up is "Entire Network". I just dont think the computer is recognizing that it is on a network. THere are no proxys, everyone else seems to have no problem just plugging in and being on the internet. I guess my computer doesnt like the idea of free internet and plug and playing. Can someone please help!!!????

First of all you need to configure network settings. You need to talk to your network admin to find out what IP addresses are asigned to the computers. You might need to set the system for DHCP but specify and gateway and subnet mask. This is all diffrent depending on what type of a network you are out. It looks like the card works fine its just your settings that need to be configured.

Good Luck,
Seth

Try running the Internet Connection Wizard (Start - Programs - Accessories - Communications - ICW) and telling it that you connect to the Internet through a LAN with and existing ISP service and let it setup the default setting. The Internet will not work well unless you do it at least once and give Micro$oft a chance to pitch their services first.
