Is it possible to start a computer via LAN?
Next question: I have a network with 3 PC's. Two are running XP and the other one is running Win 98. I just tried to get a remote desktop connection to the win 98 PC but I failed. Could anyone help me?
Last question: I tried to connect to the win98 computer via telnet, but I also failed. Could anyone of you explain me how to work with telnet?

Dear Wolfgang,

1. Possible to start Computer via LAN ? Do you mean Wake On Lan ? I've never used it but most new bio's support it and generally you'll find a cable supplied with your network cards to enable you to use this feature. Can someone help out with more detail on this ?

2. Remote desktop connection - I think it's only available from XP - XP not from XP to win98.

3. Telnet to a win98 computer, you'd have to specify which port your trying to use and exactly what service it is your trying to activate / look / listen to ? I'm not sure if there's a win98 general telnet service, as far as i'm aware there isn't.

Hey Sven.

2) Thanks for the answer. You can use the WinXP Cd on the win98 computer. I've already done this, but I can't get a connection. Do you know a program to manage this? (remote control) Just want to try it...

Wake on Lan:

Wake on Lan enables you to remotely boot up a machine on your network. Most new BIOS's support this feature and is usually part of ACPI power management.
To enable wake on lan you should:

1. Have a BIOS that supports remote wake up
2. Have a NIC that supports WOL
3. Have a cable connecting your NIC to your motherboard.
4. An operating system / driver that supports the feature. If your using Windows XP, go to properties in device manager and in the power tab: allow your computer to be woken up remotely. In my experience Windows only lets you wake up remotely after you hibernate your PC (not shut down).

You know if your network card is on standby because the lights should still be on when your computer is powered down.

Once you have those, it's a matter of getting the software to wake up your PC. AMD Magik Packet is one utility if you can find it.

Telnet:

You can telnet via a dos shell. Just type telnet . The default port is 23, but I'm not sure if windows 98 has a telnet server???

For remote control go to Google and do a search for VNC. It's a Greeeat tool.
