I have three computers and one router. The main computer is connected to the internet via a ADSL USB modem. the other two computers are pluged into the router, along with the main computer. when the main computer is pluged into INTERNET (host) port on the router, i get internet, but no files from the main computer. when it is pluged into a client port like the other 2 computers i get files but no internet. what to do?

you don't mention that you ran the network wizard on the computers, and shared each drive in my computer.
each computer needs a diff name and be in the same workgroup.

How about actually connecting properly? Like in adsl modem<>router<>pcs????

Do you understand your main pc is exposed to the internet raw? You are only as good as whatever software firewall you have.

The other disadvantage you have by your setup is you can not share files between the 2 pcs and the main one since they are in different ip subnets.

If you are doing this because you didn't purchase the router with the correct interface [usb] then your only choice is to disable dhcp on the router. Connect the main pc to a lan port NOT the wan port. Engage ICS on the main pc to bridge between the usb and nic interfaces. With this config you will be able to have all access the internet and all will be in the same ip subnet so you can share file and print services.

For more info on internet connection sharing [ics] use google.

Imagine the power if you knew how to internet search

Since the ADSL USB modem is connected to the main computer, you can only make that router to act as a switch (connect all computers to client ports), you then enable Internet Connection Sharing on main computer to share Internet connection and do file sharing.

If not, get a modem with Ethernet port(not USB modem), and set up a home network with that router.

Have fun...
