My company has just purchased a new computer running XP Prof. for a new employee and I need to set her up on the domain. How do I do this. She is already in the server as a user but I don't know how to set up her computer... Tim

As long as the user has a domain user account, log onto the machine as local administrator, go to my computer, properties, computer name tab, change button, click the radio button next to domain, enter the domain name. It will ask you for the domain admin username and password, then it should join the domain. Log off the machine as admin. Log on to the domain as the user. It will create the domain profile locally.

You don't necessarily have to use the domain admin account if the domain admin delegates adding computer accounts to domain to your user account.
MCSE, MCSA Messaging, baby!

Below is the message I receive when I try to enter the domain.
Note: This information is intended for a network administrator. If you are not your network's administrator, notify the administrator that you received this information, which has been recorded in the file C:\WINDOWS\debug\dcdiag.txt.
The domain name DOMAIN might be a NetBIOS domain name. If this is the case, verify that the domain name is properly registered with WINS.
If you are certain that the name is not a NetBIOS domain name, then the following information can help you troubleshoot your DNS configuration.
The following error occurred when DNS was queried for the service location (SRV) resource record used to locate a domain controller for domain DOMAIN:
The error was: "DNS name does not exist."
(error code 0x0000232B RCODE_NAME_ERROR)The query was for the SRV record for _ldap._tcp.dc._msdcs.DOMAIN
Common causes of this error include the following:
- The DNS SRV record is not registered in DNS.
- One or more of the following zones do not include delegation to its child zone:
DOMAIN

Are you actually entering the word "Domain" in the Domain box? You need to enter the Domain Name, not the word Domain.

Yes it is domain. For some reason when the network was setup before I was here they named it "DOMAIN"

Tim, are you actually an Administrator? Adding a computer to a Domain is a simple process if you have the proper privileges.

I am having the exact same problem. If someone can point me in the right direction, then please let me know what to check next. Here is my error message when I click: Change and enter my domain name in the box:
The domain name DURAMAX might be a NetBIOS domain name. If this is the case, verify that the domain name is properly registered with WINS.If you are certain that the name is not a NetBIOS domain name, then the following information can help you troubleshoot your DNS configuration.

I too have exactly the same prob. I am moving a user from an NT 4 to a new [eventual replacement] server 2003 domain. Put a new computer on, no problem; but try to change the domain name in system; computer name; change .... and the above problem happens for me

We have this issue when trying to join a domain over a WAN link that does not forward netbios. Try entering the full domain name, not the netbios name when joining. Example: NA.COMPANY.CORP where COMPANY.CORP is the root.
Hope this helps!

I found out what was causing my problem. If you have Norton Internet Security running turn it off. It was keeping me from connecting to the domain. Tim
