Set up the 3 win computers on a network through smc7004abr broadband router switch. All 3 can access internet and the printer plugged into the router. The 98 and the 2000 can share files between them-no problems. They can see each other AND the XP machine in Network places. BUT when I click on the XPmachine, I get this error. "//XPmachine is not accessible. The Network path is not found" The XP cannot see anything on Network places. ICF is disabled. HELP!

I had a similar problem with my 98 box
and XP talking to each other.
I even tried loading NETbeui on XP. No
help.
The 98 box could "see" XP just fine.
What I ended up doing - and this isn't a
really good fix, was to map a drive to the
shared stuff on 98.

98 machine can "see" the XP machine but can't access it.
The XP machine can't even bring up a view of the network. It gives me an error - work group is not accessible...server list is not available

have you set up an account on the xp machine that matches the one you're logging onto the 98 box with?? you need to do this. you could also try running the network wizard on xp and using the installation disk it creates on the 98 box

Everything solved with the installation of NetBEUI on the XP machine. A little tricky but it worked.

Installing NetBEUI will in most cases resolve this problem. Also be sure that your not trying to read files on NTFS file system from a FAT16 or FAT32.

There's a Technet doc that will walk through the process of setting up NetBEUI on Win XP. Go to http://www.microsoft.com/technet and search on Q301041.

Have tried networking XP to 98 and ME but no good, even after installing NetBEUI. Then Deleted all protocols except TCP/IP, XP can see but when clicked on shared computers comes up with "\\{name} cannot be found..blah...blah" Have enabled "NETBIOS over TCP/IP" yet the only way i can browse computers is by using RUN--> \\[IP address]\[shared folder].
Then for some time i can access the shared computer from the usual way. But then after some time i get the same error msg, only fixed by running the previouse command.

I tried to load NetBEUI however, with my purchase of a new computer I received a Recovery CD of XP. I don't have a XP disk.
I have searched the recovery disk and can't find a copy of the file NBF.sysCan I download this file from Microsoft or any other location?

Im having a similar problem here...
Im over a friends and this box is an XP machine that has two NICs, one for the cable internet and one for the network. It connects to the internet fine, but it wont connect to their old Win98 box.
I ran the XP networking wizzard on both machines with no luck. I also installed netBEUI on this box, and still no luck. The odd thing is that the XP box cant ping the loopback, 127.0.0.1, just times out.
They cant see each other, and I dont want to have to map it because the family isnt that computer saavy. Can anyone give me a hand here? Its driving me insane!
Thanks,
Chuck
