i cant get the networking to start. i read all the posts that i thought would help me but it didnt. i got a suggestion to check both computers and see if i had the ipx protocle. i had all these things on both my computers. the problem is, when i search for the computers in my network, i see 2 computers of the same ones that im on rite now. so if i click on it, i just get the shared files from the current computer im on.

I think you need to use NetBEUI for backward compatibility. Don't ask why, it makes no sense. If two computers are speeking TCP/IP, why do they need NetBEUI. I'm still scratching my head over this one.
I had XP and 98 networked together and I couldn't get the two systems to see each other. I asked IT Pro's and teachers what to do. Everyone and their dog told me to install NetBEUI on both sytems (A few people told me to install IPX/SPX, but 90% said NetBEUI). I was determined to connect the systems without NetBEUI. After days of frustration I finally caved. I put NetBEUI on both systems and it worked great! NetBEUI is not on XP by default, so you have to install it with your XP CD. It is found in the Value Added folder.
I hope this helps.
Cheers,
Mike
