Hi there, having some probs, hope you can help!

both pcs NIC's installed, crossover cable being used to connect the two over tcp/IP

XP machine:

IP: 10.0.0.1
SNM:255.255.255.0

98SE machine:

IP: 10.0.0.2
SNM:255.255.255.0

both machines have NIC's in device manager with no conflicts, errors or problems.

98SE machine can ping itself, but XP machine cannot ping itself!!

Neither cards' LEDs light up when cable is plugged in. Tried another cable which definitely works, still LEDs do not light up.

Tried another NIC in XP machine, no difference.

both computers are in same domain - 'Home'

Cannot see other pc in network neighbourhood on either machine, but each machine can see itself.

on XP machine in network connections, "local area connection" has a little red X on it, with "network cable unplugged" written on it. Tried another NIC and got same result, as with another cable.

when typing IPConfig, under the local area connection section it reads: "Media State.... Media disconnected"

Running out of ideas! Can someone please help??

Thanks

Usually you have 192.168.0.1 XP PC and 192.168.0.2 on W98SE.

Try another NIC in the W98 PC. Then run the Home Networking Wizard on the XP PC.

Had a spare working NIC available. Have replaced the old one with this in the 98se system.

Ran the wizard, however even though I only installed the NIC on the XP machine today, and it recognised it automatically and accepted the installed drivers as correct and up to date, during the wizard i was given the warning that the NIC is disconnected. on completion of the wizard I came to realise that it had automatically also changed the IP settings for my ADSL connection to static, instead of being on auto from ISP. I corrected this so that I could be back on the internet again.

In network connections on the XP machine, there are two items.

the first is:

Local Area Connection
Network Cable Unplugged
Realtek RTL8139/810x Family Fast Ethernet NIC

and the second is:

Local Area Connection 4
Connected
Dynalink RTA100+ USB #3

Check the nic settings and make sure they aren't set up differently . Just set them as auto for speed and duplex . Also it would be easier if you just bought a router to aggregate the connections , sounds like you are trying to
ICS .
